New Mexico bill would add Native American designation to state IDs on request

WINDOW ROCK – A New Mexico bill working its way through the Legislature this session would allow Native American residents to add a distinguishing mark to their state issued driver’s licenses and identification cards, a change supporters say has taken on new urgency as federal immigration enforcement increases and tribal members report being questioned or detained.
House Bill 20, sponsored by Reps. Michelle Paulene Abeyta, Alan T. Martinez, Angel M. Charley, William A. Hall II and Joseph Franklin Hernandez, would require the Motor Vehicle Division of the Taxation and Revenue Department to include a Native American designation on driver’s licenses and ID cards when requested by applicants who provide qualifying tribal documentation.
