Nygren recognizes McCabe as controller under court agreement

President Buu Nygren has agreed to formally recognize Sean McCabe as the lawful controller of the Navajo Nation, settling the question of McCabe’s status going forward while leaving broader legal and political disputes between the Executive and Legislative branches unresolved.
A stipulated agreement reached Wednesday, Dec. 10, requires Nygren to acknowledge McCabe’s authority as controller, support the payment of back pay and allow McCabe’s attorney fees to be covered by the Office of the Controller. The deal was reached directly between Nygren and McCabe, acting in his individual capacity, and follows weeks of escalating conflict between the president and the Navajo Nation Council.
