Nygren welcomes Trump’s pro-coal order, says Navajo Nation must help shape US energy future

TÓ ŁIZHIN, N.M. – President Buu Nygren released a statement on Tuesday expressing support for a sweeping set of executive orders signed by President Donald J. Trump aimed at reviving the coal industry, a move likely to impact both tribal economies and the national debate on fossil fuels.

Calling the order a “pivotal moment for energy policy,” Nygren highlighted the Navajo Nation’s critical role in coal production and energy infrastructure while calling for deeper tribal inclusion in federal decision-making.

“In 2024, the Navajo Transitional Energy Company was the third largest producer of coal in the United States,” according to President Nygren’s statement. “We are proud that NTEC and the Navajo Nation are part of this narrative – providing critical resources to support energy security at home and abroad.”
