Rios court date changes
ALBUQUERQUE
According to a court spokesperson, the start of the jury trial for Alex Rios, the oldest teen indicted in the murders of Allison Gorman and Kee Thompson, has been postponed until Dec. 1 in Judge Brianna Zamora’s 2nd judicial district courtroom.
Homeless in the city, Gorman and Thompson, members of the Navajo Nation, were found bludgeoned to death in an empty lot on the city’s west side the morning of July 19, 2014.
The trial begins at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to run for several days, possibly weeks. The first day of the trial will be spent selecting jurors. Once the jury is selected, witnesses will be called in.
The trial date for Rios was previously set for October 20th.
The two other teenagers accused of the murders are Gilbert Tafoya and Nathaniel Carrillo. As part of a plea deal, Tafoya pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder. He’s the youngest teen of the trio.
In exchange, Tafoya has agreed to testify against Rios and Carrillo, according to a transcript from the hearing.
Carrillo recently denied a plea deal. His trial is set for fall of next year.
