Walk like MADD
Woman organizes event in honor of her sister
ST. MICHAELS
Priscilla Begay –Gibbs is a grieving, heartbroken sister after she lost her younger sister to a horrific accident caused by a drunk driver.
Now, eight months after her sister Virginia David’s death, Priscilla is determined to have others remember her sister and to also bring awareness to a major problem found on the Navajo Nation.
“We want to end drunk driving … It may not be possible but it’s something we want to do,” said Priscilla. “They sweep it under the rug. I’m also doing this for (Virginia’s) kids to show that she’s not forgotten.”
Priscilla is currently in the midst of organizing, with support from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, an awareness and memorial walk to be held on the day her sister was hit by a drunk driver on the summit of the Defiance Plateau.
Aug. 13 is the day the Begays lost their sister, daughter, mother, wife and grandmother, and that is the day Priscilla chose to hold the event. Standing next to a memorial site where the accident happened, Priscilla, along with her other sister Darlene and their mother Jane, remembered their sister and daughter and the day she was taken from them.
“She was actually transporting a patient that day,” said Priscilla, noting that Virginia worked for a medical transport company.
