Darren Tungovia

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz.

Funeral services for Darren Tungovia, 36, of Window Rock, were held Dec. 9 at the St. Michaels Mission in St. Michaels, Ariz., with Father Patrick officiating. Interment followed at the St. Michaels cemetery.

Darren was born April 4, 1979, in Keams Canyon, Ariz., into the TchiiUnii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan), born for Tewa Bear Clan. He died Dec. 4, 2015, in Tucson.

Darren graduated from Ganado High School in 1997 and attended Prescott Community College and Arizona State University receiving an associateUs degree in business administration.

Darren served in the U.S. Navy and worked with numerous Navajo Nation offices: Division of Social Services, Division of General Services, Judicial Branch Human Resources Director, Legislative Branch advisor to Alton Joe Shepherd, Head Start, United Way, and Navajo TANF programs.

Darren was an avid spokesman, reader, writer, traveler, music and movie buff, spiritual/Native traditionalist, Arizona Cardinals fan, technology enthusiast, and powwow dancer.

Darren is survived by his parents, Howard and Vangie Tungovia; brothers, Arvin Bain, Jerald Tungovia and Terald Tungovia; sisters, Tiara Tungovia and Heather Tungovia; and grandparents, Frank and Irene King.

Darren is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bryon and Bertha Tungovia; Lowery Sr., Boyd, Hansen, Merrill, Carlos, Alton, Adeline, Alta, and Gaylene Tungovia.

Pallbearers were Arvin Bain, Jerald Tungovia, Terald Tungovia, Daniel Kaye, Damon Begay, and Duane King.

Honorary pallbearers were Howard Tungovia, Frank King, Darrell King, and Francis King.

Silver Creek Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Haskie

SANOSTEE, N.M.

A memorial service for Leonard Haskie, 71, of Sanostee, N.M., was held Dec. 9 at the Veterans Memorial Center in Sanostee. Gravesite service will be held Friday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. at the White Grass Family Cemetery in Tolani Lake, Ariz.

Leonard was born May 31, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif., into the TaUneeszahnii (Tangle Clan), born for TchiiUnii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan). He died Dec. 6, 2015, in Shiprock.

Leonard received a BachelorUs and MasterUs degree in Civil Engineering. He also received a professional engineering license in Arizona and New Mexico. He was assistant superintendent of Gallup-McKinley County Schools for 20 years. He also served as interim president of the Navajo Nation from 1989 to 1990 and as a Navajo Nation Council delegate from Sanostee Chapter for 12 years.

Leonard enjoyed reading, sports, riding horses, and was a poker player.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Jeannie Haskie; son, Lionel Haskie; daughters, Lenore Haskie, Janelle Haskie-Gonzalez and Suzette Johnson; parents, Everett Haskie and Marjorie Asden; grandparents, Lucy and Jimmy Benally; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Kylin Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Brandon Watts, Ryan Acothley, Ray Begay Jr., and Patrick Begay.

A reception will be held following the gravesite service.

Virgil Ray Fatty

TSE BONITO, N.M.

Funeral services for Virgil Ray Fatty, 44, of Sanders, Ariz., will be held Friday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Silver Creek Chapel in Tse Bonito, N.M., with Kerry Fatty officiating. Burial will follow at the St. MichaelUs cemetery in St. Michaels, Ariz.

Virgil was born July 25, 1971, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, into the Tsenabahilnii (Sleep Rock People Clan), born for Honghahnii (One-walks-around Clan). He died Dec. 2, 2015, in Sanders.

Virgil attended Sanders Elementary School, Sanders Middle School and Valley High School. He was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed drawing, listening to music, watching movies, and reading.

Virgil is survived by his sons, Zachary Fatty and Virgil Fatty Jr.; daughters, Kaelyncia Fatty and Thanika Fatty; mother, Irene Ann Fatty; brothers, Terry Fatty, Gary Fatty and Gabriel Fatty; sister, Cecelia Ann Fatty; and two grandchildren.

Virgil is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Fatty Sr.; brother, Thomas Fatty Jr.; and son, Joshua Fatty.

Pallbearers will be Terry Fatty, Gary Fatty and Gabriel Fatty.

A reception will take place at the Sanders LDS Church following services.

Carlos Taylor Morris Sr.

INDIAN WELLS, Ariz.

Funeral services for Carlos Taylor Morris Sr., 96, were held Nov. 23 at the Broken Arrow Church in Bita-Ho-Chee, Ariz. Interment followed Nov. 24 at the Arizona National Cemetery with military honors in Phoenix.

Carlos was born in 1919 in Indian Wells, Ariz., to Chee Cody Begay and Yil-ha-bah Taylor. He died Nov. 18, 2015, in Winslow, Ariz.

Carlos was a highly decorated World War II veteran. He was employed as an electrician and helped to construct major electrical power lines that criss-cross the Navajo Nation. He was involved in the Indian Wells and White Cone communities as a chapter official, school board member and senior council officer. He also served as an interpreter at his church.

Carlos is survived by his wife, Susie C. Morris; daughter, Kris Kelley; son, Dean Morris; and many grandchildren.

Carlos is preceded in death by his first wife, Rosie B. Morris; son, Carlos Morris Jr.; parents, brother and three sisters.

Robert “Bobby” Manus

FRUITLAND, N.M.

Funeral services for Robert “Bobby” Manus, 68, of Fruitland, N.M., are pending.

Bobby was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Tahlequah, Okla. He passed away Dec. 6, 2015, in Phoenix.

Bobby is in the care of Desert View Funeral Home in Shiprock.

Kathryn V. Perez-Martinez

GALLUP

A memorial service for Kathryn V. Perez-Martinez, 52, is pending. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Gallup.

Kathryn was born Dec. 8, 1962, in Gallup. She died Dec. 3, 2015, in Gallup.

Kathryn was employed as a hair stylist for over 25 years. She worked at Pro Cuts on the north side and owned her own business for over 12 years. She loved her job and her clients very much.

Kathryn is survived by her sons, Salvador M. Perez, Lucas R. Poncho, Jeremy W. Poncho, and Eric M. Poncho; father, Salvador Perez; mother, Cipriana S. Perez; brother, Jerry RMartyS Reyna; sister, Maria P. Reyna; and five grandchildren.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her grandparents, Anselmo Perez and Espiridiona Alonzo-Perez, and Porfirio Torrez and Viola L. Sanchez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Deeanna Perez, Salvador Perez III, Lucas Poncho Jr., Makenna Poncho, and Estrella Poncho.

Eugene B. Sam

KLAGETOH, Ariz.

Funeral services for Eugene B. Sam, 55, of Wide Ruins, Ariz., were held Dec. 9 at St. AnneUs Klagetoh Catholic Church with Brother Paul OUBrian officiating. Interment followed in Ganado, Ariz.

Eugene was born March 22, 1960, in Fort Defiance, into the KinlichiiUnii (Red House Clan), born for Tbaah (WaterUs Edge Clan). He died Dec. 4, 2015, in Wide Ruins.

Eugene graduated from Valley High School in Sanders, Ariz. He was employed with BNSF for 20 years and Ganado School District one month ago. He enjoyed spending time with family and attending his grandchildrenUs sports activities.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Shirley Sam; son, Kordell Sam; daughters, Retrema Sam, Tamelita Sam and Jacqueline Mitchell; brothers, Alvin Sam, Marvin Sam, Michael Sam, Raphael Sam, Terrell Sam, Fanell Sam, Darrell Sam, Rendell Tulley, Dorcell Tulley, Donovan Tulley, Terrence Tulley, Travis Tulley, and Luther Avery; sisters, Ophelia Sam, Brenda Sam, Roberta Sam, Marjorie Sam, Arlinda Sam, Euphemia Avery, Jacqueline Avery, Antonette Lopez, and Annastasia Birr; and 12 grandchildren.

Eugene is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Isaac and Sybil Shorty; paternal grandparents, Ben D. and Irene Sam; father, Bennie Sam Sr.; mother, Bonita Tulley; and siblings, Bennie Sam Jr., Alberta Sam, Lawrence Sam, Wilma Thunder Shield, Victor Ronnie Sam, and Geraldson.

Casey Lane Begay

TOHATCHI, N.M.

Funeral services for Casey Lane Begay, 26, were held Dec. 9 at St. MaryUs Catholic Church in Tohatchi, N.M. Interment followed in Tohatchi.

Casey was born July 11, 1989, in Gallup. He died Dec. 6, 2015.

Casey graduated from Tohatchi High School in 2007 and attended Albuquerque Barber School. He enjoyed playing basketball, cutting hair and loved being with family and friends.

Casey is survived by his parents, Eugene S. Begay and Teresita Keedah Haley; uncle, Kevin Mitchell; grandparents, Leo and Elvira Mitchell; grandmother, Marie Begay; sisters, Terilyn Keedah, Violet Smith, Valerie Smith, and Lanessa Houston; brother, Lane Begaye; and daughter, Aubrie Jordan Begay.

Pallbearers were Alonzo Jim, Quentin Fuson, Adam J. Mitchell, Lane Begay, Jameson Watchman, and Marcus Holian.

Melvin Tsosie

GALLUP

Funeral services for Melvin Tsosie, 50, were held Dec. 7 at Rollie Mortuary in Gallup. Interment followed at the family plot in Mexican Springs, N.M.

Melvin was born Dec. 2, 1964, in Gallup, into the TUhani (Near the Water Clan), born for Naakai dineU (Mexican Clan). He died Nov. 26, 2015, in Denver, Colo.

Melvin graduated from Tohatchi High School and worked as a construction laborer. He loved working with his hands.

Melvin is survived by his mother, Rose Tsinnajinnie of Mexican Springs; sisters, Theresa Tsosie of Crownpoint, and Patricia Tsosie of Mexican Springs; and brothers, Raymond Tsosie and Jerome Tsosie of Mexican Springs.

Melvin is preceded in death by his father, Charlie Tsosie; and brothers, Daniel Tsosie and Calvin Tsosie.

Pallbearers were Raymond Tsosie, Jerome Tsosie, Jeremiah Watchman, Jerald Watchman, Herbert Tsosie, and Cody Smith.

Myrtle Ruth Deswood

TSAILE, Ariz.

Funeral services for Myrtle Ruth Deswood, 69, of San Carlos, Ariz., will be held today, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m. at the LDS Church in Tsaile, Ariz. Burial will follow in LeChee Siklah, Ariz.

Myrtle was born Nov. 23, 1946, in San Carlos, Ariz., into IsUTonUAiyeh, born for Mohave. She died Dec. 7, 2015, in Tsaile.

Myrtle enjoyed music, the summer full of pinon-picking and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Myrtle is survived by her husband, Luke Deswood; daughters, Lucinda Campbell, Sharon Deswood and Melinda OUDaniel; three brothers and three sisters; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle is preceded in death by her parents, aunt and sister.

Pallbearers will be Kasey Williams, Stuart Campbell, Paul Campbell, Richard Campbell, Lawrence OUDaniel, and Alfred Taliswaima.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Campbell, Wayne OUDaniel, Lodge Taliswaima, Von Nez, Marlin Nez, Peter Deswood Jr., David Cortez Jr., and Michael Waterman.
