Martha Rose Van Winkle

ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Martha Rose Van Winkle, 69, of Sawmill, Ariz., were held June 19 at St. Michaels Mission in St. Michaels, Ariz., with Father Schafer Patrick officiating. Interment and a reception followed in St. Michaels.

Martha was born April 15, 1946, in Ganado, Ariz., into the Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle Clan), born for Kiyaa’aanii (Towering House Clan). She died June 13, 2015, in Flagstaff.

Martha was a loving mother, grandmother and always had words of wisdom. She retired from General Dynamics and enjoyed her retirement years spending quality time with her children, grandchildren and family.

Martha is survived by her husband, Eddie Van Winkle Sr.; daughters, Marilyn Van Winkle of Fort Defiance, Marlene Van Winkle of Fort Defiance, Elvira Brown of Gallup, and Carrie Tso of Sawmill; brother, Gilbert Begay of Crystal, N.M.; sister, Lavina Begay of Navajo, N.M.; and 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, John Begay and Hasbah Begay; sons, Terry Van Winkle and Eddie Van Winkle Jr.; brothers, Joneson Begay, Gilroy Begay and Eddie Wilson Begay; sister, Dorothy Begay; and grandparents, Billie Yazzie and Yacazbah Tsosie.

Pallbearers were Roland Begay, Chad Muskett, Chase Brown, Dwight Van Tso, Sheldon Van Tso, Eric Ross Van Winkle, Trukane Hardy, and Erik Begay.

Silver Creek Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Jim

CHINLE — Graveside service for Frank Jim, 85, of Smoke Signal, Ariz., were held June 19 at the Chinle community/veterans cemetery with Ron Little officiating. A reception followed at Mabel Jim’s residence in Smoke Signal.

Frank was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Keams Canyon, Ariz., into the Naaneesht’ézhi Táchii’nii (The Charcoal Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan), born for Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle Clan). He died June 13, 2015, in Chinle.

Frank attended grammar school in Keams Canyon and Fort Wingate High School. He played basketball in his younger years and was an automobile mechanic. He enjoyed carpentry, cooking, watching John Wayne and war movies.

Frank is survived by his wife, Mabel Jim; sons, Monty, Stephen, Dougherty, Jasper, Rueben, Kenneth, and Roger Jim; daughter, FloAnn Jim; sisters, Mary J. Tsosie, Frances Nez and Marie J. Nez; and 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Jim and Elizabeth Frank; and brothers, Ernest Jimmy and Henry Jimmy.

Pallbearers were Roger, Stephen and Dougherty Jim, Michel, Mark Chee, and Marcheal Jim.

Honorary pallbearers were Leroy Jimmy and Larry Ben.

Tse Bonito Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
