Gallup girls outlast Lady Scorps

pnDISTGLPFMT12The Lady Bengals made some mistakes of their own the District 1-5A girls match up with Farmington.

They spent most of their season collecting double-digit victories, but as the regular season came to a close, things have somewhat slowed down.

Such was the case with Farmington, as Gallup allowed the Lady Scorpions opportunities to stay close, despite Gallup’s 70-64 victory.

Gallup head coach Kamau Turner said he’s learned to not let it bother him and to simply let his team iron things out as they have been.

“I wasn’t really too worried,” he said. “I’m staring to understand that there’s going to be some ups and downs every game. All year they found a way to win; that’s kind of what I was thinking.”

Gallup jumped ahead to start the game but Farmington found a way to stay in in the second quarter. At the half, Gallup led, 35-34.

Gallup outscored Farmington 20-13 in the third quarter and allowed Farmington some room to come back in the final quarter before closing up the game.

Turner said there are some things his team can and will work on this week, but for the most part, his team just needs to keep focused.

“We have to play smarter at times,” he said. “Just execute better sometimes, but probably more important than all of that is you just keep playing.”
