Winslow boys chalk up two victories
FORT DEFIANCE
A good effort by everyone was the key for Winslow as the Bulldogs chalked two victories during its latest boy’s basketball games.
Winslow knocked off the Payson Longhorns, 83-58, in an Arizona Class 3A East Region ball game.
The Bulldogs added another 3A East Region win when they posted a 61-39 victory over nearby rival Holbrook Roadrunners.
Winslow head coach Scott Corum said the two 3A East Region victories help the Bulldogs in the standings as three weeks remain in the regular season.
“The guys played as a team,” Corum said. “The victories are important in the power rankings.”
Winslow outscored Payson, 19-10, in the first quarter. The game heated up in the second quarter. The Bulldogs lit up for 26 points while the Longhorns poured in 20 points. Winslow held a 45-30 lead at halftime.
The tempo of the game slowed down a bit as Payson netted 14 points and Winslow nailed 13 points in the third quarter. Winslow had a hot hand in the fourth quarter, rattling the cages for 25 points. Payson managed 14 points.
Junior Villanueva pumped in 25 points to pace Winslow. Rory Billie added 14 points and Trishane Cly chipped in with 13 points for the Bulldogs.
“We had a good effort overall from everyone,” Corum said. “We’ve been preaching to our boys to stop gambling so much on defense and to move their feet instead. I think we did a good job at this game.”
