Crystal native making a name for himself in the world of sports broadcasting
FRUITLAND, N.M.
When William McLaughlin used to record the games of his father’s basketball team, he dreamed of becoming the next Dan Patrick.
That was about six years ago and now McLaughlin is another step closer to becoming another familiar face and or voice in sports broadcasting.
25McLaughlin, 22, is a media relations graduate assistant in the athletic department at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri, and he is loving every second of it.
“The best thing I get from it is I get to be around sports like all the time. I’m a very vocal and verbal person, I love being outward and outspoken about stuff,” he said. “I get to communicate with a bunch of different professionals and athletes on a day-to-day basis.”
At UCM, McLaughlin is working toward his master’s degree in mass communications/media studies. As a graduate assistant in the media relations department, McLaughlin is the main contact for women’s soccer, wrestling, helps with game-day operations, collects stats, takes photos, writes press releases, and more.
McLauglin, who is half Native American (Navajo and Hopi) and Caucasian from Crystal, graduated from Chadron State College in Nebraska this past spring with a bachelor of arts degree in communications with a double option in public relations and journalism.
The road to his new position at UCM was one that started at an early age.
While in high school McLaughlin ran cross-country and played football at Grants High School before he graduated in 2012.
During the basketball season, he would record film for his father’s girls’ basketball team and prepare highlights. It was then that he realized he had a talent for it.
“The nice thing was I grew up around sports,” he said. “I always loved listening to guys like Jim Rome and Dan Patrick.”
