Exploring Navajo land
Chuska Challenge attracts riders of all levels
RED VALLEY, Ariz.
The sound of bicycle chains and cracking branches echoed through the Chuska Mountains near Red Valley this weekend.
Cyclers could be heard huffing and puffing their way through trails near Buffalo Pass and Roof Butte during the 21st annual Chuska Challenge. The challenge hosted by NavajoYES, attracted cyclists near and far for a chance to experience what the Navajo Nation had to offer in terms of outdoor activities.
NavajoYES executive director Tom Riggenbach said the two-day event held Oct. 10-11 was successful. He said NavajoYES sets out to get locals more involved in outdoor activities and to give outsiders a closer look at what the Navajo Nation has to offer.
“Considering the kind of weather we had Monday and Tuesday, I’m really pleased with the way the weather turned out. It was a good turn out and I think everybody had a good ride,” he said. “One of the things we’re trying to do is encourage folks, families to get out and explore what’s in our own back yards.”
About 60 people participated in the event; some local and others from as far as Mancos, Colo., and Tucson, Ariz.
Entertainment was provided as well as campsites for those interested. Food and other activities were also available.
