Fighting Scouts hope to turn program around
FORT DEFIANCE
After a disastrous 0-10 season last year, first-year Window Rock Fighting Scouts head football coach Scott Weaver hopes to turn its program around.
This is Weaver’s first head coaching job. Weaver has been an assistant coach for 12 years at various schools in the Valley of the Sun.
Weaver said the Fighting Scouts’ goal is to win the Class 3A North Region.
“I want to see the student/athletes give their full effort at all times and to become successful in the classroom and in the community,” he said.
The Fighting Scouts have decent size on both sides of the ball. Three players who are expected to make an impact according to Weaver are: 6-foot, 275-pound offensive/defensive lineman Shureese Keems; 6-foot-1, 250-pound offensive/defensive lineman/tight end Trevor Garnanez; and 5-foot-9, 170-pound wide receiver/cornerback Tyrell Begay.
“We are expecting our offense to be explosive this year,” Weaver said. “We have several playmakers on offense who can go the distance on any play.”
The key to Window Rock’s success is its defense.
“Our defense will be aggressive and give maximum effort,” he said.
Anchoring Window Rock’s defense are 6-foot, 225-pound linebacker Tyler Kanuho; 6-foot, 185-pound linebacker Cornelius Nez; and 6-foot, 195-pound lineman Alejandro Upshaw.
Window Rock along with Ganado, Chinle, Monument Valley, Tuba City and Page have been realigned and placed in the Class 3A North Region.
“There are some really quality teams in our region,” he said. “Every game will be a battle. We are low in numbers, however, we will make up with heart and determination. I know that they (Class 3A North Region schools) have been pretty successful the last few years. On tape they play hard and are well-coached.”
