FORT DEFIANCE

It was the battle of the unbeaten.

The Monument Valley Mustangs and the Hopi Bruins entered the gridiron contest with unblemished marks at 5-0.

After 48 minutes of hard hitting defensive play and execution on offense, Monument Valley pulled off a 58-28 victory over Hopi in prep football action in Division V, Section VII.

Monument Valley head coach Bryan Begay said it was a fun game to be a part of because of the long-standing history of Hopi being in the old 3A North system.

“This was the first time we entertained Hopi since 2009,” said Begay, while adding that his club had to prepare for the wing-T offense the Bruins ran.

Begay said the most important thing the Mustangs did on defense was line up correctly and play with discipline against the Bruins run offense.

“Their offense based on the wing-T causes defense to think more and therefore slow down pursuit to the ball if the defenders don’t react quickly enough,” he said. “I thought physically we were fine, but the thing they challenged us with and all teams have been challenging us with is being more mentally prepared. Hopi is doing some good things with some great players.”
