Navajo Tech captures 2nd national championship
CROWNPOINT
Navajo Technical University captured its second straight United States Intercollegiate Archery championship at University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., earlier this month.
NTU repeated as national champions in recurve. The team consisted of Filiberto Vecenti, Garrett Austin and Cal Price.
“I thought we performed well at the nationals,” said NTU coach Clyde Henderson. “The first day is the hardest as each has to make a judgment on the distance of each target. The targets are unmarked, meaning each target has no distance marking.”
Henderson said USCAA’s goal is to establish archery as part of the experience at colleges and universities. USCAA sanctions state collegiate championships, regional collegiate championships, 3D and target U.S. intercollegiate archery championships.
He said the intercollegiate archery championships are sanctioned by the USCAA. Henderson said in the fall there is 3D USIAC and in the spring there is indoor USIAC and the outdoor USIAC.
“Basically, the national competition for each format that USCAA members can compete in thus producing national champions, national honors, All-Americans and Academic All-Americans,” Henderson said.
