CROWNPOINT

Based on her exploits in the tie-down event, Bailey Bates made it tough for the other competitors to catch her on Saturday night.

The Mexican Springs cowgirl completed a clean sweep in the aforementioned event to win this year’s all-around title at the Ladies Nite-Out Rodeo at the Diné Bi’ Eastern Navajo Fair.
The rodeo event featured five events with 176 entries.

Bates finished first and second in the tie-down event with her fastest run coming in at 16.7 seconds. She completed her other run in 18.1 seconds and collected $945.

Bates wrapped up the all-around title by placing first in the team roping with Serna Dahozy as the pair turned in an 8.5 run that paid them $450 each.

“That is what I was looking forward to when I entered the rodeo,” Bates said of the tie-down event. “That is why I got entered twice and I am glad that everything worked out.”

Bates acknowledged that the calves were tough to tie but she felt that her brother’s horse did what he does best.

“I feel pretty confident on him and he knows what he is doing,” she said of Zip. “Whether if it’s breakaway, calf roping or team roping he gets it done.”

Five other cowgirls turned in a time with WPRA world champion Debbie Robbins (22.3) placing third, finishing ahead of April Pablo Willie (27.0).
