TC cowboy is reserve champion at NJHFR

Trey Begay knew the ramifications of the run he was about to make last Saturday night at the James E. Ward Ag Center in Lebanon, Tennessee.
It was a run that would decide the boys breakaway title at the 2017 National Junior High Finals Rodeo.
So when it was his turn to rope, the Tuba City cowboy thought about some of the previous national champions. In 2011, Crownpoint cowboy Avery Jodie won the first boys breakaway title and last year Peridot, Arizona cowboy Brandon Ben captured all the glory.
“I was thinking about that before I got into the roping box,” Begay said. “It would have been cool to have another Navajo win a title.”
Begay came close as he finished as the reserve champion by roping three draws in 8.99 seconds, losing the title to Montana cowboy Cole Trexler. Trexler won the short round with a blazing 2.19 run and finished with an aggregate of 8.18.
“It didn’t go as planned but I’m awfully proud of myself,” Begay said. “I went up against a bunch of good ropers and I finished second.”
