REHOBOTH, N.M.

With the district season more than halfway done the Rehoboth volleyball team is two games away from completing another year unbeaten in league play.

Newcomb’s Maria Begay (12) and Zoey Natonabah (10) go up for a block against the Rehoboth Lady Lynx on Tuesday evening. Rehoboth improved to 6-0 in District 1-3A play by sweeping Newcomb.

The Lady Lynx improved to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the league with a 25-17, 25-14, 25-9 win over Newcomb (7-9, 1-4) on Tuesday night.

Rehoboth closes out the regular season at Zuni (2-12, 2-4) on Tuesday before they host Tohatchi (9-7, 4-1) on Sept. 26 in what should determine the top seed for the district tournament later this month.

Rehoboth coach Charlene Chapman said being undefeated in district play is good but on the other hand she’s afraid they’ll get too complacent.

“That is what I am stressing with the girls,” she said. “I want to make sure we don’t get to that point to where we get a little too loose and overconfident.”

Other than a slight hiccup to start Tuesday’s contest, the Lynx looked every bit as the top team in the district.

Early in the first set Lynx had issues with their ball control as Newcomb gained an early 6-2 lead with freshman Zoey Natonabah serving in back-to-back aces.

Rehoboth got within 7-6 but Newcomb took advantage of a couple of misplayed rallies by the Lynx to go up 12-7.

That was when Rehoboth finally woke up as the Lynx put away six kills – three by senior Mikaela Secatero – during an 8-1 run as they took a 15-13 advantage that prompted Newcomb coach Freeland Benally to burn a timeout.
After the short break, the Lady Skyhawks got a side out on a kill by sophomore Shoshanna Begay. That was as close as Newcomb would get as the Lynx finished out the first set on a 10-3 rally.
“We had the momentum in the first set when we were up by five points,” Benally said. “We had a few service errors and that is what killed us. We just need to find that consistency to finish out our games.”
