WRestlin’ at the WRock summer duals a success
FORT DEFIANCE
Schools as far as Houston and Phoenix, including the Navajo Nation gained invaluable experience on the mat and heard a motivational speech from a former college head wrestling coach during the two-day Window Rock Fighting Scouts’ WRestlin’ at the WRock summer duals at the Events Center in Fort Defiance last Friday and Saturday.
Window Rock head wrestling coach Marc Hillis assembled a clinic, conducted by former Arizona State Sun Devils head wrestling coach Thom Ortiz. The wrestlers from the 13 schools also took park in dual matches during the event.
“It was intended as a way to get exposure for Window Rock wrestling and also as a fundraiser,” Hillis said. “The more people get to know about us, the more they are likely to come out here to Fort Defiance. I also hope to get some of these teams back for our big regular season high school tournament, the Veterans’ Memorial Invitational. Our Events Center is a place not quite common for high school wrestling. It’s huge. Our own kids get more wrestling experience in wrestling other teams off the reservation. It gets our kids better.”
Schools that participated were Hanks High School Tech Fall of El Paso; Cy Lakes High School of Houston; Maryvale High School of Phoenix; Monument Valley High School; Tuba City High School; Shiprock High School; Newcomb High School; Ironwood High School of Peoria; Greenway High School of Glendale; Marcos de Niza High School of Tempe; Horizon High School of Scottsdale; Pecos High School of Pecos, New Mexico; and host Window Rock.
