‘Voices of Women’ makes stop at Kaibeto Navajo Culture Night
KAIBETO, Ariz.
Roxyanne Harvey says she stepped into the darkness of the unknown when she became a single mother.
“My children became resentful,” Harvey explained. “They didn’t trust me anymore and told me I’m lying.”
“As parents, it’s hard to tell your children the truth about what had happened and how you can move on as a family,” Harvey continued. “So one evening I started singing.”
Her children came out of their rooms and listened, finding the sound comforting and soothing.
Harvey sang a number of songs from her album “Songs of a Mother’s Love” Thursday evening during Kaibeto Boarding School’s Navajo Culture Night. And her performance was fearless.
Harvey is part of Voices of Women, a traveling band of five Diné women empowering young people to practice a positive lifestyle, and bringing thought-provoking performances to their shows.
“We are the Voices of Women,” explained Rhonda Duvall, an R & B artist who goes by the stage name “Honey.” “We travel to different schools and we try to make an opportunity for students to be encouraged, motivated, and to live a positive lifestyle.”
And the impressive thing about their performances, Duvall says, is when parents get involved and attend the Voices of Women shows.
