Participants turned their attention to local plants Sept. 2 during the Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té, or We Are Painters, Watercolor Workshop Series at the Navajo Nation Museum Trailhead.

Rock the Canyon returned Aug. 29 to the canyon for the first time since 2019, bringing musicians, artists, vendors and families back beneath the cottonwood trees near the Eddie “Cheii” Shootinglady Pavilion.

The woman on this year’s Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial poster has no face. She stands with her hands on her hips against a field of turquoise, an eagle fan tucked at her waist and red circles of war paint on her cheeks, framed by a maroon-and-white band of diamonds and triangles.

The music came first. A cane flute no thicker than a finger and a small drum with a head painted red, white and green, both played by the same pair of hands high above the ground.
