KAIBETO, Ariz.
More than 70 riders traveled along Kaibeto Wash on horseback Saturday morning to honor local veterans during the community’s annual Veterans Trail Ride.
The event began near Navajo Route 6630 and ended north of the Kaibeto Market, where families, volunteers and veterans gathered for food, music and reflection. Riders stopped along the route to rest and regroup before completing the several-mile journey together.
Now in its fourth year, the trail ride was started by siblings Virgil Dejolie and the late Morretta “Moe” DeJoelie to honor their brothers and their late father, Jimmy Dejoelie, who served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1972. After Moe’s passing two years ago, her family continued organizing the event with help from community volunteers.
