Hundreds gathered at the historic Lobo Theater in Albuquerque on Nov. 9 for an afternoon of music, food donations and winter clothing distribution during a community-led food and coat drive organized by hip-hop artist and activist Nataanii Means.
The benefit concert was organized in response to the recent halt of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program because of the recent federal government shutdown, which temporarily stopped funding for food assistance nationwide.
By the end of the night, more than 4,000 pounds of food and hundreds of coats had been collected for redistribution to families across central and western New Mexico and the Navajo Nation.
The turnout exceeded expectations, Means said, as donations continued to arrive throughout the event. “It was a huge success,” he said. “We raised over 2 tons of food. Throughout the whole thing, people brought coat donations.”
