A new 16-foot monument honoring Route 66 rose outside the George Galanis Multicultural Center on Wednesday, marking what city officials called the first installation of its kind in New Mexico tied to the highway’s upcoming centennial.

The structure was unveiled Nov. 5 at 201 E. Highway 66. The free event featured remarks from local leaders and state tourism officials before the monument, topped with the classic Route 66 shield, was revealed.
