By the end of November 1966, most Navajos were probably sick and tired of reading election news and they were probably especially glad that the race between Raymond Nakai and Sam Billison for the chairmanship of the tribe was once and all history.

It had been a week since the Navajo voters went to the polls and decided to give Raymond Nakai another four years in office.

The ugliest race in the Navajo Nation’s history was finally over and everyone seemed to be glad after all of the media hype about the lies and the name calling, something historians said had never happened at this level before.
