Russell Begaye, who had the third highest votes in the Navajo Nation’s primary election and replaced former presidential candidate Chris Deschene, has made plans to announce his running mate today.

Not long after the Navajo Supreme Court’s settling of the Navajo Board of Elections’ contempt, and ordering the Navajo Election Administration to take Chris Deschene’s name off the ballot, former Navajo presidential candidate Myron McLaughlin filed a 162-page motion to have Russell Begaye disqualified, with the Office of Hearings and Appeals.

Navajo Nation president Ben Shelly vetoed the bill that could have aided embattled and disqualified Navajo presidential candidate Chris Deschene.

After hours of seemingly endless debating, the Navajo Nation Council voted just after midnight to remove the Navajo language requirement from qualifications to run for Navajo Nation President.
