Navajo Times to cease delivery to Phoenix, San Carlos areas

WINDOW ROCK

The Navajo Times Publishing Company, Inc. has announced that beginning Friday, Sept. 16, there will no longer be delivery of the Navajo Times printed issue to the Phoenix and San Carlos areas.

These two separate delivery routes include multiple sales outlets  in several towns along the way to Phoenix and San Carlos.
The newspaper route to Phoenix includes sales outlets located in Heber, Payson, Fort McDowell, Scottsdale, Chandler, and central Phoenix.

The San Carlos route has sales outlets established in St. Johns, Snowflake, Show Low, Pinetop, Hondah, Cibeque, Peridot, Bylas, and San Carlos.

Tom Arviso Jr., publisher of the Navajo Times, said the decision to stop delivery on these two routes was due to a decline in circulation sales.

“It was strictly a business decision. We’ve been losing money on these two routes for about the last year and although we’ve tried different things to stimulate better sales, it just didn’t work,” said Arviso. “When you run a business, you have to balance your expenses with your revenue so that hopefully at the end of the day, you are able to generate at least a small profit.

“But with these two delivery routes, we were just not covering our expenses from week to week. So, we had to make a hard business decision and that resulted in deciding to terminate these routes.”

Arviso explained that the Navajo Times would be delivered as usual to Phoenix and San Carlos on Sept. 8 and Sept. 15 but thereafter, it would cease.

“I wanted to give our readers in those two areas ample prior notice of our decision. I also believe that we should deliver them the Navajo Nation Fair edition on Sept. 8 and the Fair follow-up edition on Sept. 15,” said Arviso.

“These are two of our most favorite editions of the year and so it’s right that we share them with our Phoenix and San Carlos readers.”

Arviso emphasized that the Navajo Times will still be available through its mail subscriptions and through its online edition or “E-Edition.” You can get the entire issue of the Navajo Times through the Internet by purchasing the E-Edition. The E-Edition is posted every Thursday morning.

The one-year rate for the E-Edition is $75; 6-months is $45; 3-months is $25; and one issue is $2.

The 12-month rate for the mail subscription to the Navajo Times is $120; 6-months is $70; and 3-months is $35. Mail subscriptions are delivered through the U.S. Postal Service and each week’s issues are dropped off at the Window Rock U.S. Post Office each Thursday morning for mailing.

For more information on these subscriptions you can telephone the Navajo Times Circulation Department at (928) 871-1130; or you can visit the Navajo Times website at: www.navajotimes.com or purchase a digital subscription via this link.
