MV Utah students win at county fair
FARMINGTON
Last month, five students from Monument Valley High School (Utah) won ribbons after entering their projects in the San Juan County Fair.
This was a first-time experience for all students involved, since they are not part of a 4-H or quilting guild.
Nicole Keith and Shinibah Stanley earned blue ribbons, while Titania Benally, Crystal Holiday and Crystal Stanley earned red ribbons for their quilts.
As part of Utah’s Clothing II (Apparel Design and Production II) curriculum at the high school, students had to create a project that included mastery of certain construction techniques that could also be completed within a limited time frame. These students were impressed by the examples of jelly roll quilts from the Grayson Country Quilters. They decided to try their hand at quilting and found this project to be easy, but very time consuming.
Many families in Monument Valley own their own family businesses that attract tourists from all parts of the world. Living in an area frequented by tourists, savvy students are constantly on the lookout for skills that could enhance their family’s entrepreneurships, and the Career and Technical Education faculty tries to be responsive to these needs.
According to the Utah State Office of Education, the mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education is to help prepare students for family life, work life, and careers in family and consumer sciences by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. Skills acquired in this particular class apply to these students.
