A line of motorcycles traveled through communities during Thanksgiving week to deliver 51 turkey baskets to families in need, an effort the riders say is meant to make overlooked communities feel seen during difficult times.
The annual giveaway was organized by Leroy “Chevy” Begay, 48, of Gad’íí’áí, New Mexico. Begay is Kiyaa’áanii and born for Kinłichíi’nii. For the past five or six years, Begay and a small circle of biker friends have organized turkey distributions in various communities, but this year marked the first time they expanded the route onto the Navajo Nation.
“We usually hold this event every year. We’ve been doing it the past five or six years,” Begay said. “This year is different, and we wanted to do it on the reservation. It seems like it’s always forgotten.”
