It is very interesting seeing the approaches to planning, spending, management, tracking, evaluation – if any – and corrective action(s) plans by our Navajo Nation regarding federal funds.

It is good that 10% of the American Rescue Plan Act funding was set aside for administrative purposes; over $200 million with the creation of the Fiscal Recovery Fund office to prepare for the expenditure of ARPA funding on infrastructure and community-based projects.

There is a recent Navajo Nation Council legislation for a referendum to increase the number of delegates from 24 to 48. While that is making its way to the ballot, I want us to think about their current annual salary and the impacts of inflation.

As the campaigning for the election for Navajo Nation president is set to begin, and in commemoration of President’s Day 2022, I would like to remind the Navajo people of President Jonathan Nez’s lack of accomplishments in developing jobs and businesses.

Free press on the Navajo Nation suffered in the late 1980s and lasted through the changeover of the Navajo government well into the next decade (“Navajo Times needs your help with gathering news,” publisher’s column by Tom Arviso Jr., Jan. 27, 2022).
