Aneth leaders push for local say as Utah settlement moves into implementation

WINDOW ROCK – When federal and state leaders finalized a long-sought water rights settlement for Navajo communities in Utah, leaders in Aneth say the milestone did not instantly solve the daily reality for families living within sight of the San Juan River.
Many still haul drinking water, live with aging infrastructure and try to plan for a future shaped by drought, development pressures and climate uncertainty.
Aneth Chapter President Carma Claw said the chapter has not held a dedicated community-wide “water settlement meeting” at the chapter house, despite informal announcements during regular chapter meetings.
Instead, she said, leaders have received briefings through meetings involving the Navajo Utah Commission and Navajo Nation technical teams.
