Police Blotter: Child dies after boating accident

NAVAJO CANYON, Ariz.

A six-month-old Bluffdale, Utah, boy died Monday of injuries suffered in a boating accident on Lake Powell the previous evening.

According to National Park Service Dispatch at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the child suffered major head trauma at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday when, during an attempt to dock a houseboat on a beach in the area of Navajo Canyon, the boat struck the beach and an adult in the boat fell on him.

Navajo Canyon is approximately 12 miles from Antelope Point Marina.

The vessel had 13 people on board, including several small children, dispatch reported.

NPS Rangers were patrolling in the area at the time of the incident and responded immediately. While transporting the infant by boat to Antelope Point Marina, emergency first aid was provided, including rescue breaths and chest compressions, the dispatch report said. With the assistance of the Page, Arizona, Fire Department, the child was transported to Banner Page Hospital for further evaluation.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office responded to the hosptial to conduct an investigation into the incident. The child was flown to Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

During the early morning hours of Sept. 18, the child was pronounced dead. Names of the victim and the family were not provided in the report.

This incident is under investigation by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the National Park Service and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
