Police Blotter: NM man sentenced to 14 months in prison for assaulting 2-year-old

Gregory Kyle Chavez Jr., 29, a resident and member of San Felipe Pueblo, N.M., was sentenced Jan. 7 in federal court in Albuquerque, to 14 months in prison for his assault conviction, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office.
Chavez was arrested July 6, 2015, on a criminal complaint charging him with assault resulting in substantial bodily injury. According to the complaint, on June 13, 2015, in Kewa Pueblo in Sandoval County, N.M., Chavez assaulted a two-year Kewa Pueblo child. The child victim suffered injuries to the left facial and forehead area, including dark bruising and swelling to the left eye, left cheek, right jaw, and bruising on the neck as a result of the assault.
On Sept. 29, 2015, Chavez pled guilty to a felony information charging him with assault resulting in substantial bodily injury, and admitted assaulting the child on June 13, 2015, causing the child serious bodily injury.
Chavez will be on supervised release for three years following his incarceration.
This case was investigated by the Southern Pueblos Agency of the BIA Office of Justice Services.
