Both Navajo Nation runoff campaigns paid bills off personal cards, receipts show

WINDOW ROCK

The two candidates advancing to the November general election for Navajo Nation president spent a combined $96,367.27 to get through the July 21 primary, according to their sworn campaign expense statements.

The underlying receipts show the campaigns used different methods to pay expenses.

In the roughly 60 pages behind Justin Jones’ filing, no campaign bank account appears. His campaign expenses were paid through personal payment instruments, chiefly one supporter’s Mastercard and his own debit card, plus seven cards and accounts the documents do not identify.

Crystalyne Curley’s campaign had a bank account and campaign debit cards, one bearing Curley’s signature. Yet her receipts show roughly $6,400 in sworn expenditures paid through supporters’ and staffers’ personal cards, money orders and a $3,584.92 cashier’s check.

Jones, of Rock Point Chapter, unofficially won the primary with 15,039 votes, or 31.04%, raising $68,633.27 and spending $61,952.93. Curley, of Tselani/Cottonwood Chapter, unofficially advanced with 8,546 votes, or 17.64%, raising $35,781.55 and spending $34,414.34.
