Firefighters from the Gallup Fire Department battle a large structure fire at the Gas Max gas station in Gamerco, New Mexico on Wednesday night.

A fire got out of control at the Gas Max convenience store Wednesday evening and destroyed a large building next to the gas pumps.

The building was fully engaged by 7 p.m. and crews were still battling the flames at 10 p.m.

Dozens of firefighters from the City of Gallup and the county battled a blaze that sometimes exploded into a ball of fire that reached hundreds of feet into the air, keeping the flames from jumping to the store.

The building contained more than 50 barrels of an unknown, apparently very flammable substance.

Apache County District 2, which is represented by Navajo Nation Council Delegate and current Navajo Nation Presidential candidate Alton Joe Shepherd, ordered a 2,000 gallon, 5,500-gallon, and 8,000-gallon water tanks to assist in fighting the fire.

No official report has been issued on how the fire started or if anyone was injured in the fire, but New Mexico State Police tweeted a photo on their Twitter page and said no injuries were reported.
