Confirmed chickenpox cases prompt public health advisory in Navajo Nation
By Navajo Times
WINDOW ROCK – The Navajo Department of Health issued a public health advisory Wednesday morning, Feb. 18, 2026, after confirming cases of varicella, commonly known as chickenpox, in the Navajo Nation.
Health officials said the advisory was released in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center, Indian Health Service and tribally operated health programs to notify residents and limit further spread of the illness.
Chickenpox is a contagious viral disease that causes an itchy rash, fever and fatigue. While many cases are mild, the illness can lead to serious complications, hospitalization and death. Officials said vaccination remains the most effective protection against infection and complications.
The advisory notes that adults born before 1980 and people who have already had chickenpox are generally not at risk. People who have received two doses of the varicella vaccine and are not immunocompromised face a very low risk of illness.
Health officials asked anyone who may have been exposed and has not had chickenpox or completed the two-dose vaccine series to contact a medical provider as soon as possible. Receiving the vaccine within five days of exposure or immune globulin within 10 days may prevent illness. Symptoms usually appear between eight and 21 days after exposure.
People who develop symptoms are asked to stay home and seek medical care if symptoms become severe. Officials said keeping sick children out of school and limiting contact with others can reduce transmission during an outbreak.
Vaccines are available at IHS and tribally operated health facilities. Children are recommended to receive a first dose between 12 and 15 months of age and a second dose between ages 4 and 6. Health officials said it is not too late for anyone who has fallen behind on vaccinations to get caught up.
Officials said they will continue monitoring cases and provide updates as needed.
