Council presses DOJ on delays, prosecution gaps

WINDOW ROCK – A Council discussion over a Department of Justice quarterly report Monday night, Jan. 26, 2026, turned into a pointed debate over prosecution gaps, delayed legal reviews and whether unconfirmed DOJ leaders should be answering questions on the Council floor, set against repeated leadership shakeups in the Nation’s top legal offices.
The Council has terminated several attorneys general in recent years, including Kris Beecher, whose confirmation as attorney general failed last year The Council has also previously removed JoAnn Jayne from her position as chief justice, a termination sponsored by Delegate Eugenia Charles-Newton. Delegates cited that history as part of their concerns about accountability, transparency and stability within the Department of Justice.
