
Court ruling intensifies scrutiny as Navajo Nation awaits federal decision on ONHIR’s future

Speculation about the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian Relocation’s closure has circulated in recent weeks. Still, the Navajo Nation has not received official notice on shutting down ONHIR or its Flagstaff field office.
“We understand the community’s concern,” said Sarah Slim, the executive director for the Navajo-Hopi Land Commission Office. “But to date, the Navajo Nation has not received formal notice regarding a permanent closure of ONHIR or the Flagstaff office. Until we receive such notice, we are continuing to operate and support our ongoing relocation responsibilities.”
The agency’s operations continue under its congressional mandate, with Slim confirming a $3.5 million budget request for fiscal 2025. The funding is designed to sustain relocation activities, support resettlement responsibilities, and conduct discretionary efforts to conclude the agency’s mission.
