Déjà vu: Vetted truths and hidden costs of Nygren News

More than 30 years after Chairman Peter MacDonald Sr. fell under the weight of corruption, the Navajo Nation is staring down a familiar stench.

President Buu Nygren’s taxpayer-funded newsletter, “Nygren News,” is now at the center of a growing scandal – accused of quietly draining funds from divisions to bankroll a vetted glossy, self-congratulatory publication.

While the “FREE” magazine brags of Nygren’s accomplishments, former employees have described a presidency in disarray: mass employee turnover, discordant leadership, leading in former President Joe Shirley Jr.’s shadow, and a culture of fear gripping Tségháhoodzání. Nygren News is written by the president’s content creators, most of them former Navajo Times “journalists,” who jumped State Route 264 to the president’s office.
