Diné College BOR affirms support for George
TSAILE, Ariz.
As a handful of picketers outside the Ned Hatathlie Building demanded an investigation into whether Diné College President Maggie George has violated college policy, the regents meeting inside were tearfully affirming their loyalty to George and her administration.
The board passed a resolution stating “The Board of Regents fully supports the Diné College President and her administration team for the continuous improvement of the college, student support, academic services, resource development and facilities enhancement for the betterment of the Navajo Nation.”
Board President Laurence Gishey said the resolution was in response to “what we seen in the press,” referring to a series of Navajo Times and Gallup Independent articles about dissatisfaction among some of the college’s faculty.
George has come under fire from some faculty members and staff for allegedly hiring unqualified administrators and giving preferential treatment to the department chaired by her husband.
The college has issued a statement saying it is not violating policy, and the college has entered a period of unprecedented advancement under the George administration.
The picketers were also demanding the resignation of three regents: Fannie Atcitty, Loretta Draper and Gishey — Atcitty and Draper because their terms expired two years ago and Gishey because he does not live in his district.
