FARMINGTON – Diné Empowerment – VOICES for Equity in Education, a local advocate group for education equity, is proud to announce the successful completion of its first Educational Leadership Advocacy program, culminating in the graduation of 17 students who developed advocacy plans as a final project.
The projects cover various topics, from Diné identity to bullying, school safety, and parental involvement.
The Áłchíní Binaat’áanii Ídlį́ Program is designed to equip parents with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to become effective advocates for education equity and create a more inclusive learning environment for all students. Participants engaged in intensive training sessions over 10 weeks and 18 hours of class time on topics like Yazzie/Martinez v. State of NM, Diné Leadership, policy structure, and advocacy strategies. In addition, the participants were involved in a mentorship program to hone their leadership abilities and foster professional growth.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the successful completion of 17 graduations of the Áłchíní Binaat’áanii Ídlį́ Program because this is 17 more leaders in the community to advocate for our most prized and valued members of our society, our children,” said Betty Ojay, the managing director of Diné Empowerment – VOICES for Equity in Education. “Throughout the program, these individuals showed a remarkable passion and insight into their communities. We are confident these leaders will bring people and resources together, talk out issues, and lead a positive change in their communities that will resonate across generations.”
As part of the graduation ceremony, participants were recognized for their achievements and presented with certificates of completion, acknowledged for their commitment to personal and professional development. They provided a blessing for their path as leaders.
“The sessions were not only informative but also incredibly inspiring. The in-person sessions, hands-on activities, as well the group discussions were tremendously helpful. I am eager to apply the knowledge gained, as well as be a voice for our children,” said Denise James.
Diné Empowerment extends its sincere congratulations to all the graduates of the Áłchíní Binaat’áanii Ídlį́ program. Their hard work, passion, and determination inspire us all, and we look forward to seeing the incredible impact they will undoubtedly make in their future endeavors.
