New Mexico Sen. Shannon Pinto emerged from the 2025 legislative session with a nuanced view of the state’s political landscape, offering insights into the challenges facing Indigenous communities and the broader political environment.

New Mexico Sen. Shannon Pinto and state Rep. Joanne Ferrary speak about the liquor excise tax that was passed late Friday night in Santa Fe.

The session concluded recently and was marked by complex negotiations and ongoing uncertainties, particularly around the impacts of federal policy.

“We’re trying to be in the now,” Pinto explained, highlighting the difficulty of navigating rapidly changing political terrain.
