Drivers to expect delays and nighttime lane closures when I-40 construction begins April 1 east of Gallup
WINDOW ROCK
On Tuesday, April 1, road crews will begin working on a major construction project along Interstate 40, just east of Gallup. The project will rebuild nearly three miles of roadway between Milepost 41 and 44.
According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, the goal is to improve driving conditions by rebuilding the eastbound and westbound lanes. Crews will reconstruct two 12-foot driving lanes in each direction and widen the inside and outside shoulders to 12 feet. The project will include new median paving and a concrete wall barrier. An “official use only” crossover for emergency vehicles will be built. Workers will also rehabilitate concrete box culverts, improve drainage, and replace guardrails and fencing. New road signs and striping will be added.
Construction is expected to last about six months through September, with one year for completion. Work schedules may change based on permits and other factors.
During the first 10 days, from April 1 to April 10, work will occur overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. To allow for this work, the right-hand (outside) lane of I-40 eastbound will be closed. The right-hand (outside) lane of I-40 westbound will also be closed during that time.
The NMDOT states that drivers should expect significant delays since traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zone in each direction. All travelers are advised to use caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
NMDOT, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and FNF Construction, is leading the effort.
