Former U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced her campaign to become the next governor of New Mexico. Haaland, a member of Congress from New Mexico before joining the Biden Administration, highlighted her background and experience in her announcement.
“In my life, I’ve learned that nothing comes easy,” Haaland said on Tuesday morning in a video posted on her social.
She spoke about her upbringing in a military family, raising her child as a single parent, and achieving 35 years of sobriety.
Haaland touted her record in Congress and as Interior Secretary, saying she “helped more New Mexico businesses open their doors, powered thousands of our homes with good New Mexico sun, and brought good, paying New Mexico jobs.”
Looking ahead, Haaland said the “problems we face now are bigger than ever, and we must be fierce to solve them.” She pledged to partner with rural communities, make it easier for small businesses to grow, improve housing affordability, strengthen schools, and prevent crime.
Haaland emphasized the need to listen to New Mexicans, saying she will “be traveling the state to ask you about your ideas, your struggles and your hopes for our future.”
She concluded by stating, “New Mexicans are fierce. That’s how we succeed.”
