TÓNANEESDIZÍ – People who haul trash to the Tuba City Transfer Station may soon have to pay for the service, ending a long-standing arrangement in which the facility has been free to use.

The Tónaneesdizí Local Government’s Public Works Department presented a proposed tipping fee schedule at a February meeting, laying out a tiered rate structure based on the type and volume of waste brought to the station. The fees would still need formal approval from the Tónaneesdizí Council of Naat’áanii before taking effect.

Tuba City Chapter President Myra A. Begay said the conversation about charging fees has been going on for years without result.

“This is something that we kept talking about and it just never happened,” she said. “Coming into my presidency, I really reviewed the numbers, how much the chapter was paying. And along with several of the other council members, we talked about it and we decided this is something that we need to implement.”
