Ganado Post Office repairs underway, service could return by late March

GANADO, Ariz. – Repairs are underway at the Ganado Post Office after months of closure, and Council Delegate Vince James says service could return by late March or early April if inspections proceed as planned.

James said the post office sits on roughly eight acres of Navajo Nation business site lease land that includes the former cafe, trailer area and an old trading post site now used as a flea market.

“That whole tract there is about approximately eight acres of business site lease,” James said. “That whole property there belongs to the Navajo Nation.”

The land was originally leased decades ago by prior Ganado Chapter leadership and later converted into a Navajo Nation business site lease. The property is overseen by the Navajo Nation Division of Resources and Development through its Fort Defiance Agency RBDO office, which manages the facility and leases it to the U.S. Postal Service.

James said the layered lease structure complicated maintenance responsibilities when building deficiencies led to the facility’s closure.

“When it closed, that’s where it gave me some little leverage to say, all right, I’m just going to take over as a legislator, even though it’s not my building, even though it’s not a contract that I’m part of, even though I have no money,” James said.
