Half-billion dollar settlement received, is in the bank
WINDOW ROCK
The $554 million is here and earning interest in the bank.
This is according to Navajo Nation Council Speaker Pro Tem LoRenzo Bates and Controller Mark Grant, who issued a joint press release last week indicating the funds had arrived in Navajo coffers.
The half-billion comes from a settlement reached between the Navajo Nation and U.S. government for the feds’ mismanagement of the tribe’s trust assets. The settlement is considered the largest single resolution in the more than 100 cases filed against the U.S. by Indian tribes, according to Council spokesman Jared Touchin.
After the Council passed a bill in May approving the settlement with the feds, which was then signed into law by President Ben Shelly, an official signing ceremony with the feds occurred in September to celebrate the historical settlement. This celebration included a visit by U.S Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell.
