Hopi High athletic director out following DWI
CHINLE
Hopi Junior/Senior High School’s athletic director is no longer working for the school after a July 19 drunk driving arrest, although the school’s superintendent declined to say whether the arrest was a factor, or whether Wallace Youvella Jr. resigned or was fired.
“All I can tell you is that Mr. Youvella is no longer in that position, and we are actively looking for a new athletic director,” Superintendent Gregory Sackos said.
In a press release, Sackos recognized the former coach for “the dedicated work Mr. Youvella has done while in this role.”
Assistant Principal Harvey Honyouti will act as athletic director until someone is hired, the release states.
Mike DeLaO, president of the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s executive board, of which Youvella is a member, said he had not participated in the latest round of AIA meetings because his mother had passed away, and was not aware of Youvella’s arrest.
According to a police report from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, Youvella, 47, was arrested at about 3 a.m. July 19 after someone reported a Nissan sedan blocking traffic on the south I-17 exit ramp to Cordes Junction.
