NACE audit finds deep financial strain, CEO vows renewal

The tribe’s oldest business enterprise, founded more than eight decades ago to preserve craftsmanship and promote economic opportunity for artisans, is confronting serious financial and management problems that have raised concerns about its survival.
A 2025 performance audit by the Navajo Nation Office of the Auditor General, conducted in partnership with TAP International Inc., revealed a sharp decline in revenue, major weaknesses in internal controls, and mounting debt that threaten the long-term stability of the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise, also known as NACE. The report covered operations from June 2021 through July 2024 and offered a rare, detailed look into the financial health of the enterprise.
