
New Mexico Sen. Shannon Pinto champions new liquor tax hike

After 60 days of negotiation and collaboration, New Mexico Sen. Shannon Pinto celebrated the successful passage of a liquor excise tax bill.
This measure, part of a larger legislative package known as House Bill 14, marks a significant step in addressing alcohol-related challenges in New Mexico and directing support to tribal communities.
The effort to pass the bill involved teamwork between lawmakers. Pinto, representing Senate District 3 in northwest New Mexico, joined the initiative after state Rep. Joanne J. Ferrary and state Sen. Cindy Nava laid the groundwork.
“It was a lot of work,” Pinto said. “Some people thought it was dead. It’s really about compromise, getting it to where people are in agreement.”
