Nygren launches 11th-hour court fight to halt removal

Thanksgiving for President Buu Nygren may not be a time of thankfulness if a Navajo Nation District Court judge denies his motion to halt legislation that seeks to remove him. The effort is being led by his former Arizona State University classmate.
Attorneys for Nygren filed an emergency motion on Monday asking the Window Rock District Court to stop upcoming Council action on Legislation No. 0263-25. The bill accuses Nygren and Vice President Richelle Montoya of extensive violations of Navajo Nation law.
The motion comes as the Council prepares to take up the legislation, which remains in a five-day comment period. Sponsored by Speaker Crystalyne Curley, the bill lays out detailed allegations of malfeasance, misfeasance and breaches of fiduciary trust by the Executive Branch.
